Insuring Golf Course Homes

Golfers are responsible for paying for breaking your window..if you can find the golfer

Golf course homes are susceptible to damage from wind and fire, just like houses situated in run of the mill sub-division. But golf courses homes are on golf courses - that's where you find golfers - and sometimes those golfers aren't very good - their shots stray from the fairway and into backyards, pools and windows. Here in Florida we are visited by occasional, violent thunderstorms that are accompanied by damaging 'golf ball sized hail'. Unfortunately, for golf course community homeowners, damaging golf ball sized objects landing on the roof aren't occasional events.

Golfers are responsible for the damage they cause to your home. That's fine, if the golfer owns up to hitting a ball through your picture window, but often the culprit will just move on down the fairway, whistling as if nothing ever happened. Your homeowner insurance will pay for the damages in that case, but you will have to pay your deductible out of pocket first. And since home insurance deductibles are often $500, $1,000 or more, you will be stuck with the entire repair bill.

Keeping your golf course home safe from damage

If you have yet to purchase your home, check the orientation distance of windows to tee boxes and likely fairway shots. Trees and foliage can be a helpful protective buffer between your house and errant golf balls. Also consider the materials on your roof and siding. Tile rooftops damage much more readily than composite shingles; likewise with stucco vs. wood siding.

If you are already in your home, netting, fences or strategically placed trees can save you some heartache. For those windows that seem to have a bullseye painted on them, Lexan and other specialized glass will stand up to a screaming golf ball.

Golfers live in golf homes too

Almost of half of golf course homeowners are not golfers. So of course, the other half are.
